Event Details

The top cyclists in the world gather annually for the Gent-Wevelgem, a WorldTour cycling classic. Unique to this year’s race is its path across the same terrain that played host to the First World War a century ago. The addition of the subtitle “In Flanders Fields” to the classic’s name is a result of this. At all times, the image of the riders as armed combatants on two wheels looms large. In light of this, the race’s stated goal is to help ensure that the Great War is properly commemorated and that subsequent generations are not forgotten. As a memorial to the 600,000 casualties and heroes from the Westhoek area.

Known as the sprinters’ classic, the race has flat finishing ground, many climbs—including two ascents of the steep and totally cobbled Kemmelberg—and is held early in the season, putting riders to the test in wind and rain. Consequently, the winner often emerges from a small group of escapees, and the majority of Gent-Wevelgem editions do not conclude in a bunch sprint.
